Corsair and Viking offer an exciting boating program on San Francisco Bay. For a cost of $30 semi-annually, you can join our crew and sail our historic, wooden 30' Whaleboats, and cruise our other boats. Highlights of the program include:
- Competition in an organized sail race season with other youth sailing teams from around the Bay Area.
- Weekend and overnight cruises from our base at Aquatic Park to Angel Island, Sausalito, and other locations around the Bay.
- An annual, two week summer cruise on the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin Delta.
- Year-round sailing cruises and practices on Whaleboats, Yachts, and Lasers.
- A pulling boat (rowing) team with regular practices and competitions.
- Operate powerboats and take each other waterskiiing.
- Instruction in piloting, boat repair, life saving, and seamanship is available.
- Dances and other social activities.
Ours is an exciting program with plenty of opportunities based upon a rich tradition. The Sea offers a challenge to all who venture upon it. If you are looking for adventures, you will find them here, along with the opportunity to establish long-lasting friendships.

S.S.S. Corsair (22) and S.S.S. Viking (100) are chartered units in the Sea Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America located in the San Francisco Bay Area Council. More information on the national Sea Scouting program can be found on the Sea Scouts home page. Corsair and Viking are sponsored by the San Francisco Bar Pilots Association.
Corsair and Viking are Sailing Whaleboats--30', wooden, open boats powered by sails and oars, ketch and cutter rigged, respectively. They were constructed by the Navy in the 1930's, and donated to the San Francisco Sea Scouts during World War II. Thus, our programs each have been running continuously in San Francisco for over sixty years. Corsair is crewed by male youth, and Viking by female youth.
We have activities every Saturday during the day, and an evening meeting every Tuesday. We often have activities on Sunday afternoon. About once a month we have a cruise or trip that takes us away for the whole weekend. In Spring pulling boat (rowing) practice is on Wednesday and Thursday mornings before school. Please call the Skipper or consult one of our printed schedules for more detailed information.
Be our guest! Come on down to our Sea Base at the northern foot of Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco and go sailing with us. The boats are inspected and certificated, and licensed leaders will be on board. Or, for more information, contact us.
We'd love to hear from you! If you have any questions or comments about our web site or our program, please don't hesitate to send us e-mail or call.
Donations of usable equipment, boats or funds gratefully accepted.
